Discover Sutherland - Your Local Guide
  Travel Advice

Despite being remote, Sutherland is well connected to the rest of Scotland and beyond.

The main A9 trunk road links Sutherland to Inverness and the south as well as extending north into Caithness. The main west coast route heads south to Ullapool and beyond, connecting Sutherland to Wester Ross. Sutherland itself has a relatively good road network linking together the main towns and villages, although in some cases you may be surprised to find that these roads are single track.

Even if you are not driving yourself these roads are used by regular bus and coach services that connect Sutherland to the rest of Scotland.

The east coast of Sutherland also has good rail links from Inverness with the Far North line running from Ross-shire through many of the towns and villages in east Sutherland and on into Caithness.

All these transport links mean that Sutherland is within easy reach of the airport at Inverness which in recent years has grown to cater for many more flights from within the UK and from airports further afield.

For the cyclist, although the A9 can be busy and probably not to be recommended, there are other alternative routes north and once you reach Sutherland you will find that many parts of the county have quiet roads that are ideal for cyle touring (although you should take extra care on the single track roads).

The rest of this Travel Advice section of the site has further information on driving in Sutherland. There is also more information about the route taken by the railway line in the east of the county.
